the Patients of Austin State Hospital
Appreciation for Dianna Pickens
An amazing woman! Dianna Pickens has given her heart and soul to Austin State Hospital and continues to support its mission today.
Dianna served as the Director of Education and Rehabilitation at Austin State Hospital for thirty years. During that time, patient services included child, adolescent, and adult education, along with occupational, physical, recreation, music, dance, and art therapies.
These programs helped patients in their healing and gave them important skills for life in the community. Dianna’s passion for helping patients and her dedication to mental health awareness continue to make a real difference at the hospital.
She has also been a member of the Friends of ASH Board for sixteen years and now serves as an emeritus member. Even while stepping back from active duties, she continues to support the organization behind the scenes and offers guidance whenever it’s needed.
Dianna’s love for art and art therapy led to the creation of the Insight Art Show in 1990, and patients still benefit from her creativity, intelligence, and compassion today. Friends of ASH is so grateful for her ongoing encouragement, wisdom, and support.

Dianna Pickens was the Director of Education and Rehabilitation at Austin State Hospital for thirty years. The patient services included child, adolescent, adult education as well as occupation, physical, recreation, music, dance and art therapies.
These services enhanced the patient's healing process and provided skills for community transition. Dianna's passion for helping the patients at Austin State Hospital and her commitment for mental health awareness has continued.
She has been a member of the non-profit Friends of ASH Board of Austin State Hospital for sixteen years. Her passion for art and art therapy helped start the Insight Art Show in 1990. Patients have benefited from her love, intelligence and compassion to this day!

More than an exhibit, the Insights Art Show is a tribute to the transformative power of art—where healing begins, hope grows, and the human spirit shines.
This special evening brings our community together to recognize the importance of mental health and to help break the stigma that too often surrounds it.
Guests will experience powerful and personal works of art created by patients of Austin State Hospital, displayed alongside contributions from some of Central Texas’s most respected professional artists. Proceeds help support therapeutic and enrichment programs that make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients residing at Austin State Hospital.
